Actually, Thailand is one of the globe’s top producer of solar-cells, as energy conservation and sustainability is a big business in Thailand. Solar cell firms in the Thai stock market have been doing quite well-and if Thai Intel remembers it correctly, Thailand is now exporting solar cells globally.
Apart from Europe’s long-time involvement in solar tech, in Asia, apart from Thailand, China is another major player. But in Thailand, originally, the interest in solar energy was sparked by Israel.
What the following deal to build 2 solar energy farm in Thailand, is not just the tech involved, however. The structure of the deal is very involving, bringing together German, Singaporean and Thai interest, involving companies in the stock markets and trans-national deal making.
What it shows, is the maturity of the solar-energy sector.
The following is from a public relation statement on the deal:
Weaning itself away from European dependence may take time for Phoenix Solar but signing contracts to build two solar parks in Thailand is a step in that direction. Phoenix Solar Singapore is partnering with the Thai company, Process Engineering Services Co Ltd (PESCO) to build the two power plants, which will have a peak power of 9.7MW and 6.2MW, respectively in the north-west region of the country.
Phoenix Solar is responsible for planning the two power plants and will be supplying the solar modules, inverters and cables. Interestingly, 67,000 Schott made modules will be deployed as well as SMA inverters.
“We chose Phoenix Solar and PESCO because of their strong reputation for product and construction quality and on-time completion. They deliver the ideal combination of high-tech German engineering and technology with local construction and management know-how,” noted Dr Supot Sumritvanitcha, Managing Director of Yanhee Solar Power Co.
Solarta Co Ltd as the principal is a joint venture between Yanhee Solar Power Co Ltd and Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding PLC, an independent power producer.
“Our intention is to concentrate our projects business more on the regions of Asia, the Middle East and the USA. Following our first megawatt project in Saudi Arabia, the two projects in Thailand are another important milestone for us”, commented Dr Andreas Hänel, Chief Executive Officer of Phoenix Solar AG.
Phoenix Solar said that the projects had started construction in June, 2011 and are targeting that the Sai Yai and Sai Thong solar parks are to be connected to the grid of Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), the local energy supplier, by the end of the year.
