Arthit link to the Fascist, comes on top of news that Bangkok Bank, CP and the booze tycoon, Chareon, are also supporting the fascist protesters.
“We want to thank you Dr Arthit, for supplying lunch for the people in our movement,” said the Fascist, protesting at Sanam Lucng, on the stage. Arthit Urairat, once touted as cash cushion for PAD political party, appear to be back in the thick with politics.
Arthit’s politician business management skills have become his trademark.
And he has gone down in history as a revered kingmaker. It was he who sprung one of the biggest political surprises when he nominated Anand Panyarachun for the premiership following the National Peace-keeping Council coup in 1991. The appointment triggered a wave of euphoria, with the Elite establishment, and won Mr Arthit commendations for his courage in going against the tide of sentiment that was backing ACM Somboon’s bid to become the new prime minister. Mr Arthit was no stranger to politics, having co-founded the Seritham Party. But the party only won a few seats and suffered from a narrow support base.
He later faded from politics to concentrate on a number of family businesses, including Phaya Thai Hospital. It is said that Mr Arthit’s involvement in politics has been a costly liability to his business fortunes. Running the Seritham Party strained his personal coffers. The financial ramifications also hurt his private companies.
Mr Arthit, however, has made education an enormously prosperous enterprise. He has managed to turn Rangsit University, which he owns and operates, into one of the country’s best-known private tertiary institutions, which offers a wide range of study programmes taught by a team of so called Bangkok Liberal-minded instructors. Bangkok Liberals is the thinking that “Thai Style Democracy” where democracy is tamed and control, is best.
Some of the university lecturers have made forays into politics by frequently organising and participating in political forums over the past several years. They have joined PAD gatherings, while Rangsit University has provided financial aid to children of the PAD supporters who were injured or killed during clashes with riot police outside parliament on Oct 7.
The university was one of the two main locations where the faithful yellow shirts convene on weekend to express their views. Mr Arthit is one financial backer certain to stand behind the alliance, but it is very likely he will avoid the spotlight he once basked in during his political heyday, opting instead to work quietly behind the scenes.
