Journalism: Chiranouch’s lese majeste trial hit “Most Popular” at “All Top” Thailand news amid Bangkok terror

  • By Tammy, Thai Intel’s humanity journalist

Ouch, a reality check!

But they say many Thais live in fear of lese majeste.

As local press-print, digital or video-are hotly reporting on the Bangkok terrorist bombing-something the global press is also doing-at All Top, a global news syndicate aggregate site, that compiles all the news of a counrty-news of Chiranouch, an editor that is charged with lese majeste in Thailand had reached the second most popular spot today.

Of All Top aggregated news in Thailand, the top 5 has nothing to do with the Bangkok terrorist bombing. Also to note, that while the local Thai press, is hot on Yingluck‘s secret meeting with a real estate tycoon, in what Yingluck’s antagonist are saying is for a love affair-the news also disappeared into the abyss.

The top All Top “Most Popular” news today, is about the murder of an American socialite in Thailand. The Chiranouch lese majeste charge, by Bangkok Post, is the second “Most Popular.”

The reason Thai Intel have bought this All Top ranking up, is not to down play terrorism or news about Yingluck, Thailand’s prime minister, but it is to point out, that journalist and reporters, have typically say they have a good news sense, of what the people or readers are interested in.

But often, journalist and reporters, really does not have a clue-what readers are interested in or are reading-as All To appears to have indicated.

Off course, for journalist and reporters, there is more than just being focused on what the readers are interested in-but have a duty, to the profession, to report on important events.

But then again, what journalist and reporters see as important news, may in fact-be nothing at all, in reader’s mind.

The following is from the Bangkok Post-ranked at the second most popular at All Top  today:

    Online news:

The lese majeste verdict in the case against Prachatai webmaster Chiranuch Premchaiyaporn will be read out on April 30, two years after her trial began and three years since her arrest under the Computer Crimes Act (CCA) and the Criminal Code’s Section 112.

The Ratchada Criminal Court set the date for the verdict on Thursday.

Today was the final hearing. The defence team was told to submit their closing statement within 30 days.

Ms Chiranuch was arrested on March 6, 2009 on charge of lese majeste under CCA articles 14 and 15 and the Criminal Code’s section 112. She was granted bail within a day on her sister’s surety of 300,000 baht. Her trial began on March 31 and was completed this afternoon.

The final witnesses this week included the owner and administrator of the pantip.com website and web board, Wanchat Padungrat, and Chulalongkorn University assistant professor Pirongrong Ramasoota of the faculty of communications arts.

Mr Wanchat said his company had never been sued since the CCA took effect in July 2007, but there were lawsuits involving some people who posted comments.

While his company seemed to be lucky in not being entangled with any suits, Mr Wanchat told the court that it was impossible to monitor and check all the postings. It was not economically viable and technically troublesome.

Ms Pirongrong, expert on internet media, told the court that the Prachatai web board had put in place additional safeguard mechanisms, in addition to the four basic guidelines given by the CCA laws.

On several occasions the Prachatai web board had deleted false and insulting messages, in addition to the content ordered deleted by the ICT, Ms Pirongrong said.
