Thai Culture: New Currency “The type of love of the Thai King, that gives the Thai King a bad name”

  • By Tammy, Thai Intel’s humanity journalist

The Thai bank notes, or currency, have been around for a long time. And from sending them out for printing in forelgn lands, the Thai central bank now has this multi-billion baht, super modern printing facility.

But as they say, the more things changes, the more they can be the same. The heart of the Thai people, looks to be the same as it was, some 100 years ago.

Wikipedia says:

  • In 1851, the government issued notes for ⅛, ¼, ⅜, ½ and 1 ticals, followed by 3, 4, 6 and 10 tamlung in 1853. After 1857, notes for 20 and 40 ticals were issued. And in 1892, the Treasury issued notes for 1, 5, 10, 40, 80, 100, 400 and 800 ticals, called baht in the Thai text.

Earlier on, the bank-note was sent out by Thailand to be printed in Europe & Singapore. The design, was made in Thailand, however-with often the Thai King, working with foreign designers.

So the Thai bank-note, in baht, has been around now for about 100 years, and if you were to have walked around the globally famous, Chatuchak Week-End market, you will notice a section that deals in old coins and currency-and this is a very thriving business in Thailand.

Looking at those old currency, one would see, on every one of them, the picture of a Thai King at various times in Thailand’s history.

In Thailand, the Thai King is so much loved, the USA Embassy warns Americans not to step on the Thai currency, because of the picture of the Thai King-and if one steps on it, the Embassy says, one could be charged with lese majeste-or insulting the Thai King-and end up in jail for 20 years.

If you think that is funny, in this day and age, a rich Thai young adult, in the news a few weeks ago, tore up and burned abut 1 million baht in protest of his father giving more money to his brother-and believe it or not, a very promanent lawyer, at one of Thailand’s most respected institution, said, quote: “The circumstance of the young adult’s action, fits lese majeste offenses.”

Fast forward, to currently, and a new currency design, of the 50 baht bill, was just introduced into the circulation.

And this 50 baht bill, will likely go down in the history of Thailand’s currenccy-as the most controversial. That is because, unlike in the past, when on the currency, apart from having the picture of the Thai King, always-there was the symbol of the Thai King-to go along with the picture.

So pick up any billed currency in Thailand, and look at it, there is the picture of the Thai King and his symbol, next to each other.

But pick up the new 50 baht bill currency, again just issued into circulation, and very conspicuously, the symbol of the Thai King, is not there.

Off course, the Thai royalist hates Yingluck’s government to the maximum, because the Yingluck government has the support of the Red Shirts, a democracy leaning movement of grassroots Thais-that the Royalist says, is trying to overthrow the Thai monarchy.

So “yes” you got it, the Royalist Thai media and the Royalist social network, have been hounding Yingluck, to the maximum for the mistake-of the new 50 baht bill, having no Thai King symbol on it.

The staunch royalist, Yellow Shirts media, even says, Yingluck have committed lese majeste, or insulting the Thai King-hinting, that Yingluck is trying to topple the Thai monarchy system.

If that is what is being printed, you know in the social network-things are like 100 times that. And “yes” if you went to the social network on this issue, the Thai royalist are like “Freaking Out” bitching at Yingluck.

The problem for the Royalist is, this 50 baht bill design, was designed and approved, by the staunch royalist Democrat Party of Abhisit-to which the Thai royalist loves very much.

Matichon, a newspaper for the neutral intellect here in Thailand, pointed out the mistake of blaming Yingluck and not Abhisit for the mistake.

Well, what does one expec next, after the truth was exposed?

Well, all those Royalist media, and the social network-all of them, slowly but also suddenly went silent on the issue. Not even in one posting of the Royalist oriented social media, was there an apology for trashing Yingluck. And the print media, what a joke.

And off course, like 100%, there were no criticism of Abhisit from the Royalist media or the royalist social media.

One twitter Thai Intel have long followed, who is neutral on events in Thailand and a Royalist-says, quote: “It is these type of love for the Thai King, that gives the Thai King a bad name.”
