Thai Culture: Thai Royalist & “The Foreign Barbarians at the Gate”

  • By Tammy, Thai Intel’s humanity journalist

When a top military officer of Thailand, barks out orders for the whole country to follow-one knows things are getting very un-civilized here in Thailand.

But as the leader of the Yellow Shirts, Sondhi say, he does not think the problem in Thailand is related to anything here-certainly not about the Thai military barking out orders-but  said it is because of American capitalism.

Said Sondhi recently, quote: “The ugly American capitalism is trying to topple the Thai King.”

Bangkok Post‘s national security journalist, Wassana, just reported on Twitter, that the Thai airforce chief, said, quote: “I do not allow people to touch the lese majeste laws.”

It is getting quite obvious to the globe about Thailand’s lese majeste. Most neutral observer globally says, lese majeste is just a tool to keep the Thai establishment, including the Thai military, on top, in maintaining a rigid top-down hierarchy system-along the line of a far extreme right-wing philosophy. And the globe is highly critical of the lese majeste usage in Thailand-and have been demanding Thailand change the laws. Foreigners it seems, are knocking on Thailand’s door.

But what is the Thai airforce chief implying, with is order to the Thai people?

What ever it means, it probably means the Thai airforce chief sees Thailand as being run by the military, and the Thai parliament and the Thai people-well-if they do not listen to him, he and the Thai military establishment can always stage a coup and kill off Thais that does not follow his order.

  • Civilized or Barbaric Thai Royalist?

It sounds very un-civilized, and actually-barbaric. Only with very barbaric countries-that there is always coup staging, killing protesting citizens and putting people in jail for 20 years for insult.

Yet, the Thai Royalist say they are filled with very high morality and ethics-and in fact, lese majeste is meant to maintain that high ethics and morality. Thailand is unique and a special country, says the Thai Royalist.

With that high opinion of themselves, the Thai royalist, mostly Bangkok centric Thai establishment, have always looked down on other race as inferior-even the Thais of E-Sarn region are called servants of Bangkok.

  • Civilized Royalist Looks Down on Everyone?

But it just not only looking down at Thais from other parts of the country. The Thai royalist, looks down on a great many people. A few years ago, when Singapore, whipped a western boy for graffiti, many Bangkokians Thais said, “Barbaric Singaporean.” Then a few years ago, when Iran sentenced a women to be stoned to death, again, it is “Barbaric Iranians.” Then about four years ago, when the Americans were waterboarding suspect terrorist, again, “Barbaric Americans.” Then when the Taliban destroyed a buddhist stature, it is “Barbaric Arabs.”

Then the Arab Spring, and this left many Bangkokians very confused-as to some, it looked like the Red Shirts protest, that the Bangkokians said, are barbaric.

Then recently, Thai dogs have been disappearing, found to be dognapped, and sent to Vietnam where they eat dogs there, and again, “Barbaric Vietnamese.” Then rumors started, that foreign tourist in Phuket, were eating elephants, and the same thing, “Barbaric foreigners.” Then the Cambodians are barbaric-for some reason. Then, Lao is barbaric. Then Burma, barbaric.

Perhaps, it is very difficult to compete with the Thai civilization, having Royalty at the top of the pyramid, elevated there as god, with so many intricate and lovely traditional custom of worshiping the Royalty-with grand palaces thrown in.

  • A Degenerating Thailand?

Yet, no matter how one cover-up something that is ugly inside-putting people in jail for 20 years for insults, staging coups all the time, and killing protesters-makes it sounds like Thailand is actually winning in the race to be the most barbaric country on the planet.
