ASEAN Defense: Comment: “Thai military establishment must get down to business of defending Thailand not lese majeste nonsense”

  • by Terry, Thai Intel’s editor

Thai Intel have watched and waited, for signals, that the Thai military establishment is focusing on the defense of Thailand.

And earlier, the signs were positive, as both Yingluck and the Thai military chief, said, quote: “Thailand will focus on new type of threats from externalities.”

There is a system here at Thai Intel, in reporting events. “No” Thai Intel does not report at random, but carefully select reports, in the hope of educating Thai Intel’s readers. For example, the previous report, on the submarine situation-the real purpose, is to show how back-ward Thailand is becoming on national security-as other ASEAN countries race ahead.

Thai Intel gets a great deal of criticism, for taking a very hawkish position on defense. And Thai Intel have always stated, that in national security, there is very little room for mistakes. Meaning, when conflict do occur, always, there is no time to prepare-but in national security, a country, must be ready to defend its interest at all times.

The bottom line is, “You give 100% to be prepared, and you stand 100% ready for anything.”

Thailand is lucky. It is geo-graphically situated at the center of ASEAN, meaning, from China to India, Vietnam to Indonesia, USA to Russia, Thailand is a hot sought after ally. That, and because of the globally famous Thai Style diplomacy, of balancing all competing interest-have kept Thailand safe-for countless centuries.

But the problem is, being the center, to maintain its own identity and abling to forward its self interest-require a country that is negotiating from a position of strength.

It has been six months since Yingluck came to power, and the Thai military establishment continues to play politics. It is to the point, that Robert Amsterdam, says, the Thai military has veto power over the elected government of Yingluck.

That situation bodes ill for a country-as it indicates a dual state situation. What that means, is a country that is not together as one, representing the wishes of the Thai people, but a country, always on the threat of a coup by the military establishment.

Thai Intel just wants to remind the Thai military establishment, that last week, Singapore signed agreement with France for military technology transfer. Earlier, Indonesia, did the same thing with South Korea. Now, the Philippines wants greater USA involvement in its national security. Meanwhile, Vietnam is racing ahead with advance fighters and submarines. Then Burma, with a long tradition in military, is fast emerging, filled with countless richness.

Then there is tension-like between the USA and China. India and China. And among ASEAN countries themselves. Then Australia, Russia, Japan, South Korea, they are all pacific powers-looking at ASEAN, apart from their own interest.

All of the above, are highly important national security development in the ASEAN region.

The other day, Thailand’s leading coup staging regiment, 1st Regiment Royal Guard, sent a letter to a group of Thai human rights academic/lawyers, Nitirat, threatening their lives-over the lese majeste law amendment.

The fact is, every political party in Thailand have said they will not amend the lese majeste law. In fact, also, is that most of the Thai media, are against amending the law. The fact is also, the Thai society at large is against amending the law.

The question is, was it necessary for the 1st Regiment Royal Guard, to threaten the life of the Thai people? Then was it all that necessary, for one after another Thai military general to come out attack that group of academic/lawyer?

“No” there was no cause for the Thai military establishment to “Explode” against the Thai people, especially a small group of academic/lawyer, that is going nowhere with the lese majeste law amendment.

The discussion thread, with the Thai military establishment, should not be about lese majeste at all, but about how to defend Thailand.
