Thaksin Focus: Taksin & an Old Thai Grandmother wants to return to Thailand

  • By Tammy, Thai Intel’s humanity journalist

Last week, I was having a conversation with a famous Austrian in Thailand, Freaking Cat, and the conversation turned to Taksin.

And when anyone talks serious about Taksin, it is about corruption, War on Drugs and the terrorism infected Thai Deep South. Freaking Cat, if you have been following his Twitter, is not a fan of Taksin-and actually, like many, he is a critic of Taksin.

Thai Intel meanwhile, most of the time, “Shoot Straight.”

  • So I told Freaking Cat; first, Taksin never got a fair trial for his corruption allegations, secondly, an icon of staunch anti-Taksin Thai NGO, in private, admitted that the War on Drugs saw about 20 out-right assassination of the most hard-core of drug dealers and not the 1,000s that is widely believed, and thirdly, the Tak Bai and Kru Sahe incidents in the Deep South, that cost the life of so many Muslims, were the results of  operational mistakes.

Freaking Cat, perhaps freaked out, and start asking me for details. I gave him what I could, but told him, quote: “You must do better research on your own.”

But again, Thai Intel, most of the time, “Shoot Straight.”

So Freaking Cat said, quote, “Granted your are right on Taksin, but Taksin still needs to face a fair justice system, on corruption, War of Drugs and  the Deep South.”

I said, quote: “I agree with you.”

Then I told Freaking Cat, quote: “If Thailand had a “fair and just” justice system, most of the problems in Thailand wold disappear, overnight.” “But this is Thailand, and that will never happen,” I told Freaking Cat.

  • Taksin just got his Thai passport back, and is dying to return to Thailand. Earlier in the year, when Pheu Thai Party, just won the election, Taksin was very excited, saying, quote: “I will be back in Thailand before the year ends.”

The problem is, Yingluck’s government does not have a clue how to make that happen. The plan for a political reconciliation in Thailand-is so messed up and confusing-no one knows what is going on. You got the constitutional changes! You got a general amnesty! You got the lese majeste law reform! You got the Abhisit and Suthep murdering spree of the Red Shirts! You got a politicized military! You got a corrupt justice and anti-corruption system! You got the anti-Shinawatra Family Thai establishment!  And on this list can go on.

  • That long list of conditions needed to be met, means, most likely, this is the “Cold War” period in Thailand-that can last years with nothing, but maintaining the “Status Quo” of not letting things get worse-and Thailand deteriorate into another civil war.

The only way, for the Yingluck government, to solve the complex Thai reconciliation picture, is to become very determine and take action. That action, whatever it is, will likely out-raged the government’s opposition. The simple fact is, as the old American saying goes, “You can not make an omelet without breaking some eggs.”

Unfortunately, Yingluck have decided to keep the eggs safe, like with going after lese majeste to the tilt, that have driven many friends out of her kitchen-and will never visit her for a meal again.

The problem for Taksin, as far as Thailand entering a “Cold War” period is concerned, is that Taksin is getting old and wants to return to Thailand.

  • But it is not just Taksin:

Many Thais who want to return to Thailand, have had to cancel their plans-because of fear of lese majesty-apparently, from Yingluck’s cooking-up lese majeste.

Thai E-News, published a letter from an old Thai grandmother in the USA, providing her name and picture. For her privacy, Thai Intel have censored out that personal details. The letter follows:

Sawasdee ka, at first my daughter and I planned to come over early next year but after watching the political situation, we decided that the general atmosphere isn’t safe for traveling to Thailand, we decided to postpone our trip for the time being. It is sad to think that we Thai, are afraid to come visit our own birthplace. I myself feel so hopeless for the light at the end of the tunnel. I could see only darkness and fear everywhere. I still hope that I would be able to come for a visit before I turn 90yrs old.I will pray for that day.

I don’t want to be another Joe Gordon though what I wrote wasn’t as serious as his translation of a book..but the case of Ar Gong and others create the atmosphere of fear, none the less. I believe in being safe and sound than taking the risk.
