Thai Politics: “Factoids” from fight on reconciliation to the fake video surveillance system

By Ranger, Thai Intel’s political journalist

News: Matichon, a newspaper for the Thai intellect, have been extensively covering Thailand‘s attempt at reconciliation. But it appears, from the report, that the Thais are fighting and engulfed in talks about the right way to reconcile. On the line, is the past and the move forward in the right direction. There are several road-map emerging, from starting where the last coup left off, meaning erase traces of the coup, to starting by wiping the slate clean from here forward. Then there are other plans, sort of like a mixed grill of plans. But the bottom line to it all, appears to be the issue of what to do about Taksin,  the so called  evil corrupt person and what to do with Abhisit, who by now it is obvious to everyone, ordered the massacre on the protesters. Then there is the question about the future constitution, since the current one-is highly un-democratic, in a Thailand moving towards democracy.

Analysis: Taksin and Abhisit, remains the two polarizing factors in Thai politics. The un-demoratic Thai establishment is clinging on the Taksin issue to continue to have a life. And for those, hoping for democracy, justice, liberty and human rights in Thailand, it is also the evil murdering Abhisit, that is the main issue. In the end, whatever comes of the Thai reconciliation, will likely have to address the Taksin and Abhisit issue.

  • Military Re-shuffling and Friendship:

News: Thai military high command re-shuffling is turning out to be a highly complex exercise that has to do with little but who is who friend. As local reports dig deeper and deeper into the complex issue of the re-shuffling at the top of the Thai military-the real picture is starting to emerge that it is all about “Friendship” that has little to do with anything else. It appears that all the lines, pointing politics or national security is being breached.

Analysis: Actually, friendship is very important in Thailand, that is often more important than anything else. However, what ever happens, to the final list of those who makes it to senior position, it might cause some ripple as far as broken friendship is concerned.

  • Thailand, Cambodia and Interfering

News: Thai ultra-Nationalist continues to talk war not peace with Cambodia, now with accusations of interfering in the other internal affairs talk. Kasit, Thailand’s Yellow Shirt, ultra-nationalist, just blasted at Hun Sen for interfering with Thailand’s internal politics-with the Red Shirts going to have a soccer match with Cambodia and Taksin recent visit there. Meanwhile, days before that, Cambodia’s press, that is under Hun Sen’s censorship, made contact with Kasit-to which Kasit told them to go talk to Hun Sen about this and that. The big issue, however, with the nationalist is the changes in dispute border talk team, by the Thai Yingluck government.

Analysis: The bottom-line, is that the Yingluck government just won an election, and a staunch Thai nationalist, who puled Thailand out of the World Heritage Committee, did not even won a seat in parliament. That tends to confirm the rationale that after years of conflict between the two countries-the Thai people have had it with the Nationalist.

  • Surveillance Camera and the Silver Bullet

News: Democrat Party controlled Bangkok government is highlighting Pheu Thai Party attack of the Democrat Party on corruption. A poll days ago found that about 55% of Bangkokians, see the Bangkok surveillance camera deal as fishy. For months, the Pheu Thai Party, have been threatening to exposed the Democrat Party of corruption when it was in power. Polls of the Thais says the Abhisit government is more corrupt than Taksin’s government and that is backed up by a transparency unit findings. But Abhisit has this image of being clean that is very difficult to break through-with Thai media paying little attention to the Pheu Thai Party’s talk about corruption expose.

Analysis: The Thai journalist investigative journalist unit, actually found that those who won the Bangkok surveillance camera contract, making donations to the Democrat Party-along with a few other odds things. But overall, perhaps this is the silver bullet the Pheu Thai Party is looking for.

  • Thailand and the Intelligence Mess:

News: The mess with Thailand’s intelligence apparatus, being NSC and ISOC continues. Well, the latest, is that a very hawkish person with a track record of hard-line position, Panlop, who is all of that but is also a key Pheu Thai Party supporter-have been proposed to head up ISOC but the regulations prevents him. Meanwhile, the former head of the NSC, who was removed, is still making loud noised about un-fair transfer-even, when his own elevation by the Democrat Party, was highly political.

Analysis: the big picture is that this mess bodes ill for Thailand in general-since an intelligence apparatus is highly important to a country’s national security efforts. Then on the NSC chief, it is the typical hypocrisy in Thailand as usual-at play here.
