Thai Politics: Chalerm source on “The Litmus Test of The Taksin Issue”

A police source close to Chalerm, a minister under Yingluck, to which Thai Intel often have coffee with every morning, tells Thai Intel moments ago, that after a Chalerm “Litmus Test” on the Taksin issue, the Taksin issue appears to be a non-event with most of the Thai public.

Currently, there are two issues making “Very Massive Headlines” in the Thai press concerning Taksin.

  • For example, this morning Bangkok Post and Thai Rath, ran with major front page headline reports on Taksin. Then every other far-extreme right wing newspaper, that are fiercely anti-Taksin, also did the same thing. And on TV morning news report, it was also  very much the Taksin issue-getting most reports on.

The issue Thai press reports on involves “Major News” about Taksin.

  • One being the people’s petition to the Thai King, to “Grant Amnesty” to Taksin, and another one on petitioning the court to “Review” a corruption ruling on Taksin-relating to a guilty verdict on Taksin helping his wife bid for state property.

Both cases could clear the way for Taksin to return to Thailand.

  • The source said, quote:

“It was one of the biggest anti-Taksin news days in a very long time as the issues received massive interest from the Thai press….. I was expecting the news to generate significant reaction from the anti-Taksin crowd in Thailand.”

  • Indeed, the news on Taksin and the anti-Taksin gathering, generated a great deal of interest.

This morning, rumors appeared on Twitter, to which Thai Intel can not confirm-but it said that those close to the Democrat Party have sent out a chain e-mail, calling for a protest gathering for an anti-Taksin protest-today at late afternoon at a park-that gathering there sparked the anti-Taksin protest that set the stage for the 2006 coup.

Subsequently, Dr Tun, of the “Multi-Color” joining force with the “Protect the Thai Monarchy Coalition” and followed up on that early morning call, and called for a major gathering of anti-Taksin people-today at late afternoon also at the same park and same time-in reaction to the press reports on the Taksin issues.

  • By late afternoon, some TV close to the Thai establishment, dispatched mobile TV unit to the gathering site-reports Red Shirts who went to observe the event for the Red Shirts oriented media-expecting a major rally.

However, the Chalerm source told Thai Intel, that judging from the people who actually went to the very well publicized anti-Taksin protest, set to take place during a very heavy Taksin news period, that started about 4pm to 7pm today, quote:

  • “It looks like the Taksin issue is not that big of a deal, with only about 50-100 protesters showing up.”

He told Thai Intel, quote, “It appears that the Taksin issue is a non-event with most of the Thai people at this time.”
