Diplomacy: What is the Bangkok foreign diplomatic community hovering around Yingluck about?

For a long-time now, Thailand is known as a country with few friends globally-even with the USA and UK ambassador to Thailand, having taken side with the elite authoritarianism of Thailand.

But Pheu Thai Party of Yingluck just won an election landslide. Diplomatically, much is being said about the rise of Thailand’s first women prime minister-taking the cue from other Asian region with the rise of women-with strong political family backing. Some global press calls Yingluck, “Stylish and Steely.”

Thus far, the USA, UK, China and Singaporean ambassador to Thailand have met Yingluck, most likely Thailand’s next prime minister. Even Cambodian prime minister, have made comments of better Thai Cambodian relations. Then Aung San also made comments on Yingluck.

Thailand is ASEAN second largest economy-meaning it is also the home of many foreign firms. But it is also the center of national security in the region.

  • But there is an old Singaporean saying, that in ASEAN, when Thailand moves, the entire region moves.

Years of political instability in Thailand, have dealt a great deal of damage to ASEAN unity-but to countries like USA, UK and China-that instability have also meant a dis-continuity of normal commerce-especially as Thailand have turned nationalistic.

There are a horde of trade related questions-waiting for Thailand to address-with perhaps the Thai Board of Investments and corporate tax regime-at the forefront of issues-alone with specific issues like foreign ownership of property in Thailand, and a broad range of intellectual property issues.

National security wise, Thailand is a strong ally of the USA in the region, but China have slowly made some in-roads, with the Pacific Waters increasingly at the center of disputes-with the latest being Indonesia have called on the USA to play a central role.

But perhaps, the most crucial question, that foreign embassies in Bangkok have for Yingluck, is undoubtedly, the question surrounding “Ra-conciliation” in Thailand.

As one diplomat, told a global press, “It has been since 2005 to 2006 that Thailand operated normally as a country and we need to know, if Thailand will get back to business as usual.”

Yet on Twitter, where a great deal of diplomatic cable leak is taking place, many Twitter users are saying, “The cables tells anyone who is reading them, the extent foreign diplomatic community is involved in Thailand internal affairs.”

“Countries like China for the first time, is seeing directly, the working of the USA and UK embassies in Thailand,” said one Twitter.

The bottom-line, to Thai Intel, is that there is a major shift talking place in Thailand-at a time, when there is little secret left-and the result, may well be a heightened competition globally for Yingluck’s interest.
